After almost three years, after long internal discussions and a change of presidency, and finally the long awaited BMW 3 Series-based crossover / utility vehicle production is to reach an agreement.

The versatile new BMW CUV, but must also give the badges F3 once it reaches showrooms, has considered since 2004 and is based on internal documentation recently shared with AutoWeek.

Deconstruction is an effective means for reducing construction demolition (C&D) debris at a time of diminishing landfill capacities and increased environmental awareness. This paper compares the cost of residential building deconstruction with the cost of demolition in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The comparative cost analysis is developed by systematically analyzing two separate residential deconstruction projects previously reported in other studies and augmenting with up-to-date cost data for Massachusetts. The study shows that under current conditions in Massachusetts, deconstruction costs could be 17-25% higher than demolition costs. The analysis further identifies and ranks the parameters affecting these costs. These parameters, in the order of their impact on costs are: labor cost (either productivity or hourly rate), disposal cost (tipping fee and transportation), and resale value of deconstructed materials. A sensitivity analysis is used to identify the break-even points for these parameters such that deconstruction becomes economically competitive with demolition. This study demonstrates an approach for planners of waste management programs to evaluate and develop strategies for promoting C&D waste reduction.

The Significance of the Hippodrome – Touran Samii

The declaration of Constantinople as the capital of the Roman Empire in 330 BC was not only a political statement, but one that also announced the urban development of the city as one pertaining to Roman architecture and city planning. It was a city meant to illustrate the success of Constantine’s military and portray the lavishes and wealth of the newly expanded empire. Similar to the metropolis of many Mediterranean capitals, Constantinople featured forums or public meeting places, surrounded by imperial quarters and basilicas used for civil services or religious purposes. At its center, lay the imperial palace flanked by the pilgrimage-worthy St Sophia to the South of Agustaion square and the Hippodrome to its South-west (Cormack 38). Dispersed among these magnificent structures, were open squares decorated with an abundance of flora.

The hippodrome defined as “an oval stadium for horse and chariot races in ancient Greece (“Hippodrome Merriam-Webster) served as a place for political and imperial activities to those of entertainment. Extensive in its dimensions, it is speculated that it could accommodate up to 80, 000 people (Hennessey 207). Located at the long central terrace, also know as the spina, were a series of monuments and sculptures. The Obelisk of Theodosios, the Serpent Column from Delphi, and a masonry obelisk decorated the space while symbolically representing individual narratives of the great emperors (207).
The Obelisk of Theodosios is an Egyptian obelisk originally constructed by pharaoh Thutmosis III. The structure originally stood among the structures of the great temple of Karnak located in Luxor, neighboring the capital city of Cairo (Habachi 2). Theodosios had the magnificent obelisk transported to Constantinople in the fourth century where at first, it was stored along the shipping docks of the city. When it was transferred to its permanent location, it had to be shortened, an engineering feat for its time.
More importantly, the obelisk is set on a marble pedestal adorned on all four sides with reliefs. The South face of the base depicts the emperor offering laurels to the winners of the chariot race (Cormack 16). On another face, the emperor is illustrated among his courts, seated on a throne. On the West face, Theodosios is shown dressed in traditional Roman attire surrounded by his enemies offering gifts of submission. There is also a Latin inscription verifying the patron as the great emperor Theodosios I (16). It is important to recognize that this monument functions as a narrative representing the power imperial presence of Theodosios in Constantinople.
Although the hippodrome is no longer a place of chariot-horse races and the viewing of great emperors, it still holds its importance as the city center in modern day. It is a sight that is visited by thousands of tourists from across the world on a daily basis. More importantly, it is still used by the local population, not only in its memory of historical merit, but also as a place serving an abundance of local activities, from cultural ceremonies to a leisurely Sunday outing. In this way, the hippodrome is integrated in the current urban landscape. Moreover, its historical significance is still conserved through its exemplification of historical architecture. Although it may be used for different means, it is still a display of Roman forum structural design. In this way, the hippodrome represents not only a historical Byzantine past, but also a contemporary present.
As one can see, Constantinople was a municipality, which embodied Byzantine art and architecture that referenced the design of cities across the Roman Empire. I thought about this emerging of different architecture as a walked around Sultan Ahmet trying to keep up with the constantly moving group of fellow art history students. It was an experience that opened my mind and eyes to the meaning embedded in the everyday structures. In other words, I was enlightened. With my new understanding and knowledge of the ancient sites of Constantinople I am able to better comprehend the complexity of Istanbul and especially its connection to the past. It truly is a city that is a mixture of both European influences and those of the East, a unique combination that cannot be found in any other city I have visited so far.
